Random Shots: Simple neon for a Highland hangout spot

Rojo is the next entrant in the journey across the city in search of neon signs. This business has been open for several years in its Highland Avenue perch overlooking Rushton Park. At night, especially during the warmer months of the year, this space represents the liveliness of the city’s Southside. This activity makes for a great view as you approach the restaurant from all points east with a greater emphasis on a nighttime approach. Hopefully you can make out the scene; my hands have not been that steady recently.
Our first sign seemed to generate a great deal of interest, so we’ll see how many more we can find around town in the coming weeks. A photo gallery will begin to be populated this evening as well. Check back to see when the link is activitated.
Cheers.

Random Shots: WorkPlay Wednesday takes to the digital airwaves

Yesterday afternoon people showed up at WorkPlay on Birmingham’s Southside for the bar’s WorkPlay Wednesday promotion. Each week the bar hosts a happy hour with specials on martinis and food provided by area food establishments including the new Tria Market in Homewood. John’s provided the food yesterday and the WorkPlay Podcast provided the entertainment. The link will take you to the MySpace page. The online show, currently boasting more than 5,000 subscribers, highlights new music and new artists. The show will now record its “filler” moments at the WorkPlay bar on Wednesdays, focusing on stories from those in what’s now the audience. Click here to view some more images.
It will probably also serve as a place to talk about upcoming events, including the Feminist Debutante Guild’s upcoming comedy show Christmas in July. Birmingham’s comedy troupe plans to bring sketch comedy to WorkPlay Theatre next Saturday, July 8, beginning at 9 p.m. My friend Chris, the guy who did one of the City Stages shirt designs, is in the troupe, but don’t it against them J
More later,
Cheers.
P.S. Don’t forget to keep it relevant. And this story as well.
