I was originally planning to let this morning’s post be the only word from me today. I appreciate those that have already commented and look forward to more comments and opinions. Click on the link if you have not already viewed the post. I’m hoping that the conversations sparked by the post may lead to some concrete solutions or at the very least, acknowledgment of the issue. 3choBoomer was right in that I don’t take the gloves off very often, but I’m starting to realize that it needs to be done by someone. You can’t sit around and wait for the solution to fall into your lap.
But the idea of sitting on two pieces of information for another day would have been just way too difficult. So, two things that should make regular visitors happy… I hope
(Pictures to follow this evening)
The return of the Jaycees Haunted House is upon us
Yes, for all those fans of the Birmingham Jaycees’ haunted house, you can stop jumping up and down from the excitement of it all. (Point of disclosure: I’m the 2006 Community Development Vice President, so the idea of having one of our signature fund raisers back is really, REALLY good news!) N.B. We’re in the process of updating our web presence, so please be patient. Our local chapter president, Sarah Pilgreen, sent an e-mail to me late this morning confirming that our former haunted house location has been leased back to us for the upcoming spooking season by St. Vincent’s Hospital! No dates have been set as of yet, however I think that I can safely speak for the Jaycees when I say that we are extremely excited to have this event back. For those that are not familiar with the Haunted House, it once served as the Birmingham chapter’s largest fundraiser of the year. Proceeds from the house go to assist the organization in accomplishing our goals of leadership development and community service. Keep your eyes open for additional information about the House, as we would love to have more people come out and help (and possibly join one of the greatest young professional organizations in the world – sorry, it’s almost automatic sometimes when it comes out)
A short sneak peak of Sidewalk
I was also surfing the net trying to find some information on our local, incredible film festival, Sidewalk. In case you can’t go to the special screening tonight or see the short preceding Raising Arizona, you may want to read on. While the announcement of films is not for several weeks, it appears that one film has already jumped the gun and let the world know its going to be screened in the Magic City. Yard Sale, a documentary about holding onto family history while shedding excess mementos, has already announced that it will be screened at the film festival, entering its 8th year. The site includes the film’s trailer, information about the director and news about other festivals that it has been shown at. This year’s festival takes place September 22-24. It promises to be a great year this year as well, especially after being named one of TIME magazine’s “Film Festivals For The Rest Of Us” in a recent issue.
One more thing
This week’s Birmingham Weekly cover story is about the Birmingham Sound debut party taking place on Saturday. Click here to see what we posted this past Saturday.
Have a great day!
Cheers.

Comment by Carolyn August 20, 2006 @ 12:18 pmThanks for being a great chapter member and officer. Chris “Cowboy” Odham, 2006 US Jaycees Chief of Staff, seemed very impressed with your ideas and presence and I appreciate you representing us with class, dignity and respect. I have had and have more ideas for membership and would love to get back to being one of the top recruiters of our chapter and our state. Cowboy presented a great Action membership seminar at Conference that I would love to go over with you and get your and the chapter’s ideas on. I look forward to seeing you all soon. Maybe Thursday’s meeting? If not, any one with ides, call me at your convenience. I am always here for the organization needs.
Always in Jaycees,
