Guard cats need a home
No, not my cats, though they’ve been getting quite upset recently about the lack of attention given to them on the blog. That’s when I remind them that they’re almost never mentioned on the blog. They calm down… for a second.
Anyway, Martin and Lewis, the keepers of all things good at Ruffner Mountain Nature Center, are themselves in need of a good new home. Ruffner’s executive director, Kathy Stiles Freeland, would prefer that the felines get to go to the same home if at all possible. Calling all volunteers…
Artwalk is still seeking volunteers for the weekend of September 8 & 9. They need people to serve as artist hospitality, providers of information, and manpower for trolley stop area, performance areas, setup, etc. Please e-mail Robin Spooner and let her know if you are interested in helping out with this incredible event in our City Center.

Today’s Election Day in Mountain Brook, Gadsden and Bessemer. If you live there and want the privilege of complaining about those that are elected, the polls should be opening soon; get out and vote.

Thursday – The Saga Continues in District 54 and a chance to scare
The rescheduled contest hearing for District 54 will take place today in Montgomery. One hopes that this issue will be settled once and for all, regardless of what happens. The decision rendered by the state Democratic Party will have effects that reach far beyond politics and the state as the story has picked up national press. The ability to live with the committee’s decision will be a test for a city that so badly wants to be New South but still shows signs of a modified Old South in this instance. You might also be interested in attending this month’s general membership meeting for the Birmingham Jaycees. As posted last week, the Jaycees are currently set to return their haunted house in Lakeview to operation in time for the spooking season. There will be a need for volunteers to help put together this event with the meeting serving as the first steps in getting them organized. The meeting will take place at the local chapter office, located at 619 Robert Jemison Road beginning at 6:30 p.m. You just might be able to learn more about the Jaycees and add to our calendar of activities.

It’s your last chance to suggest a name for the newest addition to the Birmingham Zoo family. We’ve posted about the recent birth of a baby giraffe and the zoo wanting their visitors to help in naming him. Well, today’s the last day to do so. Tonight’s also the last Artwalk Brewhaha before the festival itself takes over the loft and design districts of Birmingham in September. This month’s event is showcasing several of the artists that are taking part in this year’s edition. Any opportunity to encourage and assist our artists is great for the future of the cultural experience here in Birmingham.
Saturday – BarCamp Birmingham is on!
I recently signed up to attend this event, which actually begins Friday evening with a mixer in Five Points South. From what I can tell, it is born of a desire to learn more in a sharing environment.
