Of course one of the fun things about traveling and seeing friends from college is the ability to watch the new people in their lives, especially if they’re in the “little people” category. This is Katrina; she’s almost 3 years old and she served as my “host” during my trip to Washington, DC for Main Street certification training. Here she is on my last full day in town showing me everything that one can do besides eat red onions. What’s not shown is the reassembling of the rings, her taking them back apart, and the use of tomato and lettuce to make a face.
One of the more enjoyable moments of the trip.
Enjoy the day.
Cheers.

There seems to be a lot of buzz going on about last night’s American Idol episode. Well, I admit that I didn’t watch the episode; I’m still attempting to recover from traveling and testing last week. We’ll get back to the world of blogging tomorrow, but first I figured I’d share a couple of images from my trip. This image is of an “iPod vending machine” at Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport. Definitely a sign of the times.
More later.
Cheers.
P.S. Today would have been Jackie Robinson’s 88th birthday. Check out this entry about his life and accomplishments.

There have been many people, myself included, that wondered if our new rock station would ever have actual people manning the station. Initial announcements on “The Vulcan” stated that on-air talent would begin shortly after the 1st of the year. Now, something may have changed in the last few days, but a check of the station before I left for DC let me know that it was still unmanned.
According to FMQB.com, an industry site for radio professionals, the first steps have been taken to finally address the issue. Jimbo Wood from WRTT in Huntsville has been announced as the program director for 105.5 beginning February 7. Wood had been with Rocket 95.1 for seven years as their PD. According to his bio this would be a return home to Birmingham, Alabama for Wood where he got his start in Birmingham working for WERC-AM and getting on the air in 1979 for WKXX-FM. He’s also worked in Montgomery, New Orleans, Memphis and San Jose and lived in the Bahamas.
Welcome home! Things may be starting to settle down, at least a little. I’d be interested in those from Huntsville that normally listen to Rocket 95.1 commenting and letting some of us know what to expect.
That’s all for now. I’m finishing up reviewing for the first of two tests this week up here; by the time this actually posts I should be at that frustrated phase of the exam
It is three hours long after all. It’s about 6:39 a.m. local time, and this is the last real break before the exam.
Enjoy the day,
Cheers.

I’m currently in Washington, DC for the week taking part in training related to my job. It’s fairly intensive but a lot of fun. There’s also the fact that the Northerner in me is still trying to adjust to the cold weather. While some of you may laugh, when you’re walking around in freezing rain and snow, it’s a big difference (and a little relaxing).
As the tests end, and I take breaks from studying, we’ll make sure that we at least try to keep up with things. I figured it would be silly to not remind everyone of tonight’s Red Mountain Park meeting at the Birmingham Museum of Art’s auditorium. I believe the fun starts around 6 p.m. and it will include the revealing of the final draft master plan for the regional park. I’m interested in seeing just what the plan contains when I get back, and I have a weird feeling that many people in town may be interested enough to venture out tonight.
N.B. The best part of doing these posts this week is the fact that I can finally demonstrate the fun part of doing this. As this posts, I’ll be sitting in a class taking notes tax credits in class, having written this before venturing out to Union Station, 3-4 hours before. Yeah, I’ve given away one of the “secrets” but I think it helps some folks realize just how this thing works.
Enjoy the day,
Cheers.

BCAP initiative honored in DC
The Birmingham Cultural Alliance Partnership (B-CAP) was one of 17 honorees from the U.S. and Mexico presented with the 2006 Coming Up Taller Award in Washington, DC on January 22. Coming Up Taller is an initiative of the Prresident’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. The awards recognize and support outstanding community arts and humanities programs that celebrate the creativity of the young people of America, providing them with new oppportunities to learn and contribute to their communities. It also highlights the contributions made by historians, scholars, librarians and visual and performing artists to families and communities by mentoring children.
B-CAP is a initiative led by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) involving six area cultural institutions, the City of Birmingham, Alabama and the Birmingham City Board of Education. It annually connects 200 inner-city youth from Banks and Hudson Middle Schools with BCRI’s community partners using arts and humanities to reinforce classroom learning, promote student achievement, nuture personal development and increase parental involvement in education.
For more information, visit the Coming Up Taller website by clicking here. Congratulations, now if I could only find out the names of all of the institutions involved…
Cheers.
