777s ruled illegal, enforcement to begin soon
Mayor Kincaid announced after Tuesday’s City Council meeting that he would authorize the city to begin enforcement of the ban on adult video games. 777s have been an issue in the state of Alabama until a recent state Supreme Court decision ruling the games illegal. Operators and users are subject to arrest and fines. Check out this article from the Birmingham News for additional information:

It’s just keeps getting easier to be unwired in Alabama
According to this post on the TechBirmingham blog, the state of Alabama has moved up AnchorFree’s list of states with the most free WiFi hotspots from #10 to #8. Birmingham, Alabama currently occupies the #10 spot among cities in the country. We already boast more than 300 wireless access points in the area, with several more becoming “unwired” soon, including The Wine Loft and Metro Bistro. You can see a list of local WiFi hotspots by visiting Bhamwifi.com.
Student rush tickets for Moving Out at the BJCC!
Broadway Across America Birmingham (MySpace site) announced late Tuesday afternoon that they would be offering student-rush tickets for the remaining performances of Moving Out with a valid student ID. Tickets will be 1/2 price and available 90 minutes prior to any performance of the Billy Joel musical at the BJCC Concert Hall box office (NOTE: BJCC has recently launched a new site. It moves a little slow, but it’s an incredible improvement overall). There will be a limit of two (2) tickets per person. There are nightly performances at 8 p.m. with a matinee performance on Saturday, January 20, starting at 2 p.m.
Special $15 tickets will be made available to students for any seat to Sunday’s matinee or evening performance (1 & 7 p.m. respectively). These tickets will be available through Ticketmaster either via telephone (715.6000) or online at ticketmaster.com as well as the Concert Hall ticket office. You will want to ask for the T-TYPE ticket and use the password EDDIE. The show runs through January 21.
Number of “Art on the Rocks” events to reduce for 2007
Extremely successful since its inception in 2005 and used as the basis for many events geared towards involving the young professional community in the arts and culture scene, Art on the Rocks has become an extremely large production. This requires a tremendous amount of time and energy from the Birmingham Museum of Art’s staff and volunteers (though it has seen benefits, like a substantial increase in the number of memberships to the museum in the last two years). The event has become so large in fact, that there is discussion of reducing the number this year to four (4) allowing for staff to focus on the other activities of the museum. An excellent example of the larger event would be Pompeii exhibit arriving at the museum in October and the Folk Art exhibit scheduled to open next month. Both exhibits were spoken about in this previous post.
Enjoy the day.
Cheers.
Yes, there are more movies to talk about (and festivals)

We’ve already mentioned all the cinematic options available to locals and visitors (hello!) alike in town this weekend. Well, there are two more things to point out this morning. First of all, it luckily did not get cold until late last night, so those that were able to make it out to Movies by Moonlight enjoyed great weather and a great treat: Napoleon Dynamite. The winner of the viewer’s choice vote was announced as well; this film will be shown in October as the last feature of this year’s series. And the winner was quite appropriate indeed when you think about it…The Empire Strikes Back! Early reports are saying that costumes will be encouraged, just in time for Halloween. The Birmingham Jaycees will also have a table at next month’s event, giving away two tickets to the return of their Haunted House in Lakeview. The house will provide funds to do community service activities through 2007 and the end of 2006 for the civic organization.
“Dynamite’s” producer is also brought this year’s opening film for Sidewalk to fruition. If you have a chance to get a ticket and can’t get in to see Batman Begins at McWane, check out The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang tonight at the Alabama Theatre. (Don’t forget Urban Reversi tomorrow morning! They’re meeting at the Harbert Center) They had a great time running the game last weekend in Williamsburg.
You might also want to check out the competitive film slate using the button off to the left.
You many also notice a venue along 3rd Avenue North that has a slightly more localized flare. The Cakewalk Film Festival makes its appearance this weekend in downtown Birmingham. This festival also hopes to do more to help local filmmakers, as is Sidewalk’s primary goal. We’ll have to wait and see what the effect of having two festivals at the same time will have on downtown… wait a sec… we’ll actually have four festivals going on at the same time. Let’s not forget about the Greek Festival on Southside and the Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival primarily located at the Carver Theater. It’s getting more like NYC all the time (better to have too many options than too few).
A visit to the House that Ruth built, after lunch.
Cheers.

Yesterday’s early post included information about the Urban Reversi game being played throughout the Artwalk site and the City Center of Birmingham today. The images above are of the two teams that took part in the first game this morning.
If you’re interested in seeing how the game’s played, there may still be time left to come downtown and see firsthand as an afternoon game is played (enjoying the art of Artwalk as well). You may also click here to see the game in progress.
We’re in the process of postings images from this morning to the Flickr account. You may also want to check out the Urban Reversi group on Flickr as the pictures from the morning game are posted (they’ll be posted there as well).
Don’t forget Brooklyn, you’re next, with a game demonstration set for next Saturday in Williamsburg. You may even see me attempt to come home to the Big Apple to get in on the fun. If you can’t make it to New York or downtown Birmingham today (and if I can’t find a cheap flight), there’s always the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival later on this month.
More later,
Cheers.
So what are you doing this weekend… how about Artwalk?

There’s not a lot I can add to Artwalk coverage for the weekend. If you want to learn about the artists, they have a page. If you want to see the festival layout, there’s a page for that already too. They will still have chances to win the Stella scooter as well as chances to pick up Artwalk swag at their online store. And when I thought about putting up a list of bands, I was reminded of their MySpace page and the information available there. So I just figured I’d link to it all for you
I could try to go into detail about the Urban Reversi game taking place on Saturday morning and starting at the Catalyst table before the crowd shows up. Click here to learn more about how it’s played and to see images from last year’s game during Sidewalk. The game is being played based on time, though it could also be an excuse to check out some of the artists while they get ready for Saturday’s crowds. Urban Reversi is a result of the $20,000 grant awarded to Catalyst and TechBirmingham last week by Verizon Wireless. The game is also being played as a demonstration in Brooklyn next week and making its second appearance at Sidewalk the weekend of September 22-24.
The festival has expanded their site to include First Avenue South. If you’re wondering how you’ll be able to get around from one end to the other, you’ll enjoy riding around on a trolley this evening. The rubber tire vehicle is going to provide attendees to ride through the streets and get a taste of what’s going on around the site. It is a locally owned vehicle and it is also available for rental as well. The atmosphere created by Artwalk in downtown should give an accurate glimpse into what would happen if people continue to invest in the urban areas of our city, including downtown and the other urban commercial districts throughout the city and the region.
After all of the excitement of Artwalk, you may want to get out and kick the ball around… say by playing Kickball in Avondale Park. The first official blow you socks off Kickball game in town starts up this Sunday in Avondale Park. We just wrote about the recent creation of the MySpace page for the group. Hopefully the crowd will show up and not only participate but support this activity. And just imagine what it could be like after the completion of the Railroad Reservation Park’s first stage.
This is an interesting time in the history of the city. The idea that there are so many things to do over the course of the weekend is incredible. Supporting all of these events is physically impossible, however it’s important to remember them whenever you run into someone that tells you that there’s nothing to do in town. The only way to change the perception is to get people to come out and take a look for themselves.
Enjoy the day.
Cheers.

The view from the top of the state
I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend. We enjoyed ours on this end, though it ended with my knees bothering me much more than I had planned. Before anyone asks about what my doctor would think about what I did yesterday, he didn’t know. Hopefully, I won’t be that stiff when I go to see him either.
Bets and I decided to take a trip to the hiking trails at Cheaha State Park. For those of my friends that read this that are not familiar with Alabama, the state park is the highest point in the state. As a result, you get to enjoy some incredible views from the overlooks. It was my first rigorous hiking experience since moving to Alabama nearly two years ago. All I will say is that what began as a two hour hike became a day-long hike. The views were worth it, as is evidenced by the image at the top of the post. There are more images available by clicking here and visiting the photo gallery. If you feel so inclined, you may also want to post a comment saying what you did for the holiday. Or just laugh at the pictures of myself and Betsy dripping along the trail.
Mystery solved
Last week I posted about a “big check” presented to Catalyst at a press conference held by Verizon Wireless. Well, now the cat can be let out of the bag about the reason and planned use of the $20,000 grant. Click here to read more about the planned collaboration between Catalyst and TechBirmingham. This is a great accomplishment for both organizations and yet another way to distinguish Birmingham from other cities in the southeastern United States.
Fall festivals are getting really close
I’d like to thank the guys at Sidewalk for linking to my post containing detailed information for all of the competitive film and documentaries for this year’s festival on their media page. Click here if you have not viewed the post and take the opportunity to figure out just what you’ll see when the festival rolls around at the end of the month. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to give some of the Artwalk artists a similar treatment by Thursday afternoon, as that festival kicks off Friday evening.
Speaking of both of those festivals, I was reminded earlier today that in my constant rushing mode of doing things, I’d forgotten to do the drawing for the Artwalk and Sidewalk passes last week in conjunction with the Happy Hour for a Cause event. So, I’m promising right now that the winning numbers will be drawn this afternoon and posted late this evening. I’ll contact the winners via e-mail and hope that those that win the Artwalk passes get in touch with me before the fun starts Friday.
We’ll see you later this evening.
Cheers.
