Dre\’s Ramblings

Silvertron’s open, the race explained, ghouls need a hand and indy film gets another venue

As always, there’s a lot going on in town, and we only really tackle the tip of the iceberg here. As hinted at in last night’s last post, Bets and I went to the Silvertron Café for its grand re-opening. The interior is now a little brighter, with the walls repainted white. Many of the images that had been up previously are not there, however the menu has barely changed. Most of the items are there, with a couple of new additions. We seemed to just beat the evening rush and aside from some problems with them closing out our bill, it was a lot of fun. We ended up with leftovers, and most people were happy to see the doors reopened.

The fact that the Silvertron is open should be good news to some of the runners here in town, providing another option for meals the night before or right after a race. Speaking of which, the one item I forgot to include in yesterday’s post, thus solving the riddle of letting the races begin, is the fact that I’ve already received my e-mail reminding me that registration has opened for the Vulcan Run. The annual race, serving as the RRCA National 10K Championship Race for 2007, has set up registration online at active.com and has entry forms available for downloading. I’m excited because I have been told that I can enter the race and use it as my first one since injuring the knee in May! It will be a case of finishing rather than worrying about a time to beat. The race benefits the Birmingham Track Club and Vulcan Park, where the big guy himself looks over the Magic City and the region. We’ll keep you posted about race status.

More after the jump…

Those that were excited to hear about the Birmingham Jaycees Haunted House making a return to Lakeview this October may also be happy to learn that the first work party to get the house in shape for the scaring season will be this Saturday. It’s a great time to come out and volunteer your efforts to help us get the house ready. Proceeds from this year’s house will help us fill the requests of children in the community at Christmas time. It may also give you a chance to visit with members of the organization and see if you’d be interested in joining too. If not at one of the work parties, how about at one of the last two Movies by Moonlight in Linn Park this Fall. Jaycees will be in attendance and will be able to answer questions about the organization and activities for you. The short version is that it is whatever you want it to be. But come on out and see what it can be for you.

It’s also come to my attention that Safari Cup Coffee will be showing independent films in their upstairs area beginning next week Thursday for five weeks. The first film in the series is “Anytown USA.” All films will begin at 6 p.m., with ticket prices starting at $8. Click here to view a PDF containing descriptions of all of the films in the series. This is just in time to pique our interest in film in time for Sidewalk, and to keep us happy after the festival is over.

And if this doesn’t keep you busy, there’s Artwalk and the Museum of Art’s Print Fair next weekend! More later on those activities and others.

Cheers.

I hope it was your knee doctor who told you you could enter the race. Glad to hear you liked the new Silvertron; our nephew is waiting tables there now.

Hey, thanks for the Sidewalk info. Also, I tried your tip on Betolla today. They’ve got a great lunch!
