Dre\’s Ramblings

Live blogcast from Workplay Theatre: “American Idol” Finale Viewing Party

11:25 p.m. The band has finished their set. Most of the people have begun to leave, including those that bought their official “Soul Patrol” T-shirts in the lobby. The performance was incredible. Due to the problems towards the end with the camera, I’m going to post the rest of the images from home, most likely early tomorrow morning before my first meeting. Everyone in attendance had a great time, all talking as though they know Taylor Hicks personally. Bets and I will probably start packing up shortly to go home. I have a feeling that we’ve avoided most of the problems in terms of leaving.

I think that many of us feel that we “know” Taylor because he didn’t change during the competition: he’s the same guy who left to follow his dream. I have not been a regular viewer of American Idol; I don’t know if I ever will be. I do know that his love of music carried him to a recording contract. Living the dream.

For more, you may want to check out Wade’s post about Taylor’s win posted earlier this evening.

Cheers.

11:00 p.m. I’m guessing it’s about midway through the second set and the battery in the Ramblings camera is beginning to signal that it’s out of juice. We’ll take a couple more pictures while we’re enjoying the music. Many people are starting to get up and dance in the aisles of the theater. The band is having fun up there, including playing two horns at once and enjoying incredible solos.

10:20 p.m. There was a sudden rush of more than 150 extra people entering the theater space around 9:40 p.m. The Little Memphis Blues Orchestra took the stage shortly thereafter. There first set lasted for 30 minutes. 30 minutes of fun. People dancing all over the space. Just finished hearing words from the executive director of the beneficiary of proceeds from the event. She invited everyone to come out and visit the Studio. Awaiting the return of the band for the second set. They’re out here enjoying the night and happy that their guy “brought it home tonight!”

8:59 p.m. “SOUL PATROL!” Taylor Hicks’ first words as the winner of American Idol: Season 5. Loud racous response from those in attendance here at the Theatre. They’re now waiting for his old band, The Little Memphis Blues Orchestra, to show up for a 9:35 p.m. performance to celebrate. More pics from the crowds reaction shortly.

8:55 p.m. Well, it’s almost time, and the crowd is getting restless. I figured I’d take a look at if anyone else in the Birmingham blogging universe was even posting. The only entry I found was this cool one from Pretty Helmet. And now of course the viewers are enjoying McPhee’s and Taylor’s performance of (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.

8:37 p.m. I’m sitting in the Workplay lounge now, had a few connection issues with the laptop. The crowd’s getting louder with each Hicks appearance on the screen. There are some more pictures up right now. There should be plenty more in about 20 minutes when they announce the winner. We’ll see.

7:25 p.m. Light applause from the crowd in the theater for McPhee’s performance with Meatloaf. AP reporter is combing the crowd for interviews. Just finished interviewing Alan Hunter for the report.

7 p.m. The show has begun and the entire crowd is entire theater space is packed. More pictures as they become available during commercial breaks.

Well, we’re here.

Fox 6 is about to broadcast from the Workplay Theatre showing the benefit viewing party for Studio by the Tracks. Check out the post from earlier this evening to learn some more about the event, and click here to learn more about this great organization. We’ll try to post both here and on the photostream site:

Of course, Associated Press has a video crew here as well as our local Fox affiliate. The pictures should begin being posted within the next 5-10 minutes.

More later,

Cheers.

The Ramble: Heat wave brings surge in development activity news to B’ham

Pictures, get your pictures here…

Pictures from the Catalyst Get in Gear event at Sloss Docks last night are now available for viewing on my photostream page, courtesy of Smugmug. There are not as many as there are in the set that Curtis Palmer posted earlier today, however it gives another set of images from the event. Let me know what you think of the new site and its options.

Idol fever hits its zenith; we'll know sometime around 9…

The theme throughout the city today seems to be hope. There are quite a few people that hope that Taylor Hicks is successful in his bid to be the next American Idol. Some of them will be gathering at the BJCC beginning at 4:30 p.m (click on Events Calendar). Others will be gathering at WorkPlay as I mentioned in my early morning post. I also mentioned that I would be providing some coverage from their viewing party, beginning after their regularly scheduled WorkPlay Wednesday activities.

Places change, but the people stay the same

There is also hope in the announcement made that Restaurant G will be leaving its location in One Federal Place to take over the restaurant space in the historic Tutwiler Hotel as part of its multi-million dollar renovation come fall of this year. A new name will also result, to be announced in a few weeks. Phrases used in coverage the announcement, covered in both The Birmingham News and the Birmingham Business Journal, lead people to believe that Starbucks could become the next tenant announced to take up residency in the former apartment building turned hotel. The relocation of G to this downtown hotspot guarantees that the stage is set for a new restaurant to enter the downtown scene. The business that chooses this spot will benefit from the project announced by Melaver in March that has been discussed here as well. The renewed development activity in downtown is expanding as well.

Development fever is catching…

There are many that would not consider anything south of the railroad tracks downtown. If anything, this man made dividing line simply separates the “old” downtown from its newer, more health driven section. Additional developments advanced as a result of a vote by the Birmingham City Council, enabling potential development on the former Tom Williams automotive site. The construction of a limited service hotel, coupled with increased residential development and an ever expanding set of hospitals, may finally provide the visual link necessary for the entire area to be viewed as one downtown. The Railroad Reservation Park will serve as icing on the cake if you will.

And spreading…

The bug is also carrying throughout the city, for various reasons. A park proposal is moving forward on the east side of town as well as plans for the world’s largest retailer to create a larger presence in town on the city’s east side, bringing with it renewed interest in the surrounding commercial area. Hopefully some of that will also spill into the neighborhood commercial districts surrounding it as well, providing some relief for small business owners.

and spreading…

Word on the street is that there will also be some new smaller retailers providing services to the Five Points West area soon. And development in the Ensley community, also posted about recently, leads to the promise of a return to prominence for the Magic City. Hopefully you’ll take a look around and notice the changes coming and take a closer look at the positives happening in our region. Maybe you’ll even pass along a lead or two to your friendly neighborhood blogger. Any comments?

I’ll see you tonight,

Cheers.

A busy night and day as we await “American Idol” decision and another way to support Taylor

An early morning update:

This afternoon, we’ll post about the current flurry of activity around the city, particularly in the Southside section of downtown. We’ll also see if we can salvage some images from last night’s Catalyst event at Sloss Docks. More than 200 people decided to GET IN GEAR with Catalyst last night, listening to the sounds of while getting a sneak preview of the Alabama Folk Art Museum being organized for the Alabama Year of Art in 2007.

This evening we will be attempting to blog live from WorkPlay as we await America’s final decision during the American Idol finale. Taylor Hicks’ band, the Little Memphis Blues Orchestra will be performing live and proceeds from the event will be going to Taylor’s charity, The Studio by the Tracks. Check out Hicks’ interview with the local Birmingham Public Radio program Tapestry from December 2005. The event is currently sold out, so we’ll try to keep you as updated as possible. And you can always give a donation to the organization on your own.

Stay tuned…

Cheers.
